Methodist Digestive Institute

Methodist Digestive Institute – A Hub for Digestive Health Services

If you suffer from a digestive disorder, you are not alone. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 60 to 70 million people suffer from digestive diseases. Because digestive diseases are complex, and symptoms are often subtle and gradual, sufferers commonly endure multiple doctor visits and undergo batteries of tests seeking relief.

A national leader in digestive healthcare, the Methodist Digestive Institute (MDI) at Methodist Dallas Medical Center brings together a multidisciplinary team of physicians, researchers, and health professionals to improve access to services and close the gap between symptom onset and successful treatment. Furthermore, MDI is on the forefront of offering advanced technologies, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and incisionless treatment for acid reflux and achalasia.

Support Services
MDI support

MDI’s support services exemplify the Methodist Health System core value of having a servant’s heart. By compassionately putting others first, we are constantly reminded that healthcare is not one-size-fits-all. It takes a listening ear and a servant’s heart to understand and meet the patient’s needs. Some of the ways we personalize care through support services include:

  • Genetic counseling
  • Nurse navigation for pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer patients
  • Nutrition counseling for both inpatients and outpatients
  • Pain management support
  • Palliative care
  • Psychosocial services
  • Survivorship services

Quality Commitment

In addition to providing personal, multidisciplinary care and advanced technology, MDI works to enhance the health and well-being of patients through continuous quality improvement efforts. These efforts increase providers’ knowledge and understanding of healthcare practices and their contribution to treating disease, and enable patients to access innovative, high-quality services.

Current and past quality improvement initiatives efforts focus on:

  • The impact of mindful stress-reduction interventions on patients anxiety, stress, and pain levels.
  • Implementation of standardized order sets to improve clinical outcomes without increasing costs in patients with acute pancreatitis.
  • Integration of palliative care early in patients with unresectable metastatic pancreatic cancer disease course to improve symptom management, quality-of-life, and patient and caregiver satisfaction.

Clinical Research

Research helps doctors and other providers improve the quality and safety of the care they provide to their patients. It also enables patients’ to have access to high-quality and novel treatment options. MDI participates in this process by collecting and analyzing data on the progress of our patients in order to compare the effectiveness of different treatments for the same disease or condition, to evaluate different approaches to a procedure, or to see what factors influence patient experience. All patient information is blinded and aggregated to protect patient privacy.
