Who Benefits From Revision Surgery?

Many factors need to be considered before you decide to undergo revision surgery. Most people start considering revision surgery because they have not lost the weight that was expected. Other times, patients have lost a significant amount of weight and then years later re-gain a substantial amount. Other times, patients develop medical problems that may benefit from a different weight loss operation.

Examples of Revision Operations:

  • Adjustable gastric band to gastric sleeve – Placement of an adjustable gastric band can be associated with a number of problems. These include weight regain years after the original operation, the presence of the band can lead to long-term difficulty in swallowing, new medical problems related to obesity appear years after the band procedure, the band can erode into the stomach requiring removal. These problems with the band may benefit by removing the band and performing a gastric sleeve.
  • Gastric sleeve to gastric bypass – Weight regain or difficulty treating acid reflux after gastric sleeve are two reasons to consider revision from gastric sleeve to gastric bypass.
  • Revision of gastric bypass – There are many options to treat weight regain after gastric bypass. Unfortunately, none has proven to be superior over the others. Revision of gastric bypass surgery requires a detailed preoperative workup, a very committed patient and careful planning in order to achieve satisfactory results.
  • Gastric band to gastric bypass – Gastric banding was a very popular weight loss procedure for a time, but it proved ineffective for a number of patients. Removing the gastric band and undergoing a gastric bypass can be used to solve this problem.
