Better Informed, Better Outcomes

The Methodist Joint Academy is a free educational workshop that helps prepare "students" both mentally and physically for upcoming joint replacement surgery, the best possible surgical outcome, and a faster return to normal daily activity. The Methodist Joint Academy is taught by health care professionals, including those who may be caring for you during your hospital stay.

Students attend Joint Academy after scheduling hip or knee replacement surgery. Held on the hospital campus, the one-day program offers a comfortable learning environment with a handful of fellow patients. Topics include:

  • Engaging classroom instruction about what to expect from pre-op, joint replacement surgery, and recovery
    • Hip, knee, and shoulder anatomy
    • Joint replacement techniques, including minimally invasive joint replacement surgery
    • Safety, benefits, and risks of surgery
    • Pre-op preparation to optimize the success of surgery
    • Planning and preparing for recovery and post-op rehabilitation
    • Recommendations on how to enjoy restored mobility and daily life
  • Question and answer session with caregivers
  • Admissions and pre-registration to eliminate delays the day of surgery
  • A tour of the orthopedic floor, designed specifically for the needs and comfort of joint replacement surgery patients
