Osteopathic Recognition

The Methodist Charlton Family Medicine Residency Program received Osteopathic Recognition from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2016, and now offers an Osteopathic Focus Track. Our residency program previously was dually accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and the ACGME. With our approved Osteopathic Recognition status, we are currently a single accreditation program governed by the ACGME.

What is the Osteopathic Focus Track?

The Osteopathic Focus track is a longitudinal curriculum open to all DOs currently, and in the near future will be offered to MDs who have completed training in OMT and osteopathic principles. Our program is currently in the process of leading faculty development in Osteopathic Principles and Techniques for our MD faculty, while at the same time developing a curriculum for MD students who have a sincere interest in learning Osteopathic Principles and Techniques.

What to Expect

Osteopathic focus residents are expected to use their osteopathic skills and knowledge to diagnose and treat patients in the both the outpatient and inpatient settings. In our Family Medicine Center, OMT clinic is held twice a week which is staffed by DO faculty. Residents are scheduled in these clinics based on their rotation schedules and will have ample exposure and experience to using their OMT skills during their time in residency. Additionally, twice a week, residents consult on patients in the hospital and perform OMT on hospitalized patients under supervision of the faculty.

Monthly OMT workshops are led by residents for hands-on training and experience. Faculty led didactic sessions are presented every other month and open to all interested MD and DO residents. Osteopathic focus residents are required to take the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) in-training exam along with the ACGME in-training exam.

After the Program

Residents successfully completing the Osteopathic Focus Track are eligible to take examinations from either the AOBFM or the ABFM. The AOBFM certifies you in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Medical Treatment. You will not be required to take both examinations.

Please notify Dr. Kabani of your interest in the Osteopathic Focus track during your interview and during orientation week. We will enroll you in the track at the start of your residency.
