Thank you for your interest in the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas, Texas! Methodist Charlton cares for the vibrant population in Southern Dallas County, and is a modern teaching, acute care community hospital nationally recognized in many specialties. As a pharmacy resident at Methodist Charlton, you will be part of a department with a family culture that strives to optimize and advance the care of our patients. The purpose of our program is to build upon each resident’s pharmacy education foundation and develop a diverse skill set for clinical pharmacists capable of caring for patients in a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient acuity levels. With a variety of pharmacy roles including pharmacy specialists, clinical pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians, you will be a part of a department that is highly integrated as part of the care team. Upon graduation, residents will have acquired the skill set required for achieving board certification in pharmacotherapy and be able to successfully enter postgraduate year two pharmacy residency training if so desired.

Our residents interact with students from several colleges of pharmacy across the State of Texas. Layered learning is a strong aspect of the teaching opportunities responsibilities of the resident, and they will have the opportunity to precept pharmacy students during their residency. Residents will also earn a teaching certificate during their residency year.

General Information

The 12-month residency experience at Methodist Charlton Medical Center is designed to provide residents experiences in a variety of clinical areas. Our goal is to contribute to the development of pharmacists who are responsible for the care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and ready to embark on postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training if that is their goal. Resident responsibilities include:

  • Establish a collaborative working relationship with health care providers in the community
  • Identify patient-specific drug therapy problems to be resolved and/or prevented
  • Learn to create a comprehensive care plan and provide appropriate education to the healthcare team
  • Participate in various hospital committees including, but not limited to, P&T and Quality & Safety committees
  • Participate in various pharmacy consult services provided by our pharmacy department including total parenteral nutrition (TPN) consults, antibiotic dosing consults including pharmacokinetics, and warfarin dosing consults
  • Attend in-hospital medical emergencies through our "Code Blue" alert system
  • Participate in the development and implementation of selected policies and procedures
  • Have in-depth knowledge regarding the day-to-day operations within the pharmacy department

Residents will also perform the following:

  • Completion of a major research project that is presented at the ASHP mid-year clinical meeting and regional residency conference, ALCALDE
  • Completion of a medication utilization evaluation
  • Present various journal clubs, case presentations, and in-services
  • Obtainment of preceptor license from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy
  • Opportunity to attain a teaching certificate through University of North Texas Health Science Center College of Pharmacy

The resident will structure their year by choosing a schedule consisting of calendar month-long rotations with ten required rotations and two elective rotations. In addition, there are several required longitudinal experiences described below:

  • Pharmacy Administration (longitudinal)

  • Cardiology/Congestive Heart Failure Clinic
  • Infectious Disease II/Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Pulmonology/Respiratory Therapy
  • Anticoagulation Clinic (longitudinal)
  • Ambulatory Care II
  • Critical Care II
  • Emergency Medicine II
  • Internal Medicine II

Application Process

In order to be considered for the residency program at Methodist Charlton Medical Center, you must complete each of the following steps:

  1. Register for the ASHP Resident Matching Program
  2. Utilizing the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) submit the following:
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Letter of intent
  • Three references (Please have references complete the PhORCAS reference template)
  • An official copy of the college of pharmacy transcript

Requirements for Acceptance

  • Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Full eligibility for Texas licensure
  • Eligibility for employment at Methodist Charlton Medical Center
  • Participation in the residency matching program
  • Formal interview
